Take your shoes off, lift one foot 12 inches off the floor, cross your arms, and see how long you last before you wobble, grab something, or put your foot back down. If you can't hold it for 10 seconds, that's not just an annoying party trick you've lost — it's a number worth paying attention to.
A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed 1,702 people aged 51 to 75 for a median of seven years. Everyone took the same simple test: stand on one leg, unsupported, for 10 seconds. The people who couldn't do it had an 84% higher risk of dying from any cause during the follow-up period than those who passed. Put in plain numbers, 17.5% of the people who failed the test died during the study, compared to just 4.6% of those who passed — even after researchers adjusted for age, weight, and existing health conditions.

## How to Actually Do the Test Safely

- Take your shoes off, or wear flat shoes with good grip.
- Lift one foot about 12 inches off the ground, arms crossed or by your sides.
- Look straight ahead at a fixed point, not down at your feet.
- Time yourself (or have someone else time you) until your raised foot touches down or you reach for support.
- Repeat on the other leg — the two sides often aren't equal, and that gap is useful information too.
- Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth or waiting for the coffee maker — two minutes a day, split between both legs.
